As someone who is trying to reduce as many chemicals as possible out of their life, I was wondering how necessary are detergent and dryer sheets? I obviously knew they contained chemicals, but I never really though about it until tonight. I had odd wet looking stains all over my freshly washed and dried laundry, and asked the man who operates the laundromat what the hell they were, and he said sometimes dryer sheets leech chemicals into the clothes. This is not something I want on my body. Me and my fiancee don’t really get our clothes "dirty" with stains and stuff, we just perspire and wear the article a few times. Since they don’t really have any more dirt than skin cells and perspiration, and don’t smell weird or anything, do we really need to use chemicals to wash and dry them? I don’t care that they’ll be a little static-y, as I steam or iron almost everything before wearing anyways.

Also any other tips for chemical-free living would be great too, we know about food and household cleaning products, but I’m sure there’s lots of things with toxic chemicals lurking around the house we don’t think about (yet) if you care to share your tips THANK YOU :-)

We got a "new" dryer in the laundry room in our apartment building, and seeing as how they almost never fix anything in this building, I was the first person to use it and went over after about 20 minutes to check to see if the clothes were drying. When I went into the laundry room, it smelled like electricalal wiring burning. So I knew it was the "new" dryer. When I opened the dryer, I was blasted in the face by steam, and ended up going to the ER with a burn on my lips, inside my nose cornealal injuries from steam, and a slight burn on my face. It was so hot, it actually burned off some of the hair on my arms!
Now the manager of the building says that he won’t pay my medical bills, he also told me that "There isn’t steam in the dryer, it’s a gas dryer" Well, there was, and I got burned, now what?
He even had someone in this morning to "fix" the dryer that wasn’t broken in the first place (not broken according to him because it was just installed yesterday!)
    Here’s the thing
It’s the ONLY dryer in our building, I didn’t actually know it was just installed yesterday, or I wouldn’t have bothered, had the baby not needed laundry, and I had a sitter, I would have gone to the laundromat
As for the lease, they REFUSE to send me a copy, I’ve asked on several occasions.
I’m not asking for millions, just enough to see the opthamoligist to gauge the total extent of my eye damage. Let me ask you this, should I have let the dryer continue to run, even though I knew it would have caused a fire had I let it keep running?
It’s not as if it has a "STOP" button, so my choices were limited, let it run and cause a fire, not to mention ruin all of my baby’s clothes, or open the door enough to stop the dryer, and save everyone the trouble of calling the FD and standing outside all night waiting to see if it’s safe to go back inside?
There are 12 apartments in this building, 2 washers, 1 working dryer. If you’d like Genius, I can take a picture of that for you!
I also realize that steam only goes so far, but I’m less than five feet tall, so, its not as if I stuck my head in there, and I’ve contacted a lawyer who is actually going to help me with this claim , and not an ambulance chaser seeing as I’m not seeking personal damages, I just want my medical bills paid!
You are a bitter and cinical person, you may want to seek therapy for those issues!
Oh, yesterday they sent someone to "fix" the dryer that wasn’t broken, and again today, over there fixxing the dryer that isn’t broken, I even took my cell and digi camera over to take a picture of the maintence man doing the repairs!

    Steam ironing your clothes?

Does anyone else have this problem? I pour water into my iron and set it on the steam setting. Once I am ready to iron, water drips out from the bottom and wets my clothes. It is really annoying. This happens with every iron I have owned, borrowed or used. Is there a trick for the water not to dribble out everywhere? It is especially annoying when I wear tan pants because I wind up with wet spots you can see. Please no disrespectful or mean answers!
The water drips out while I am acutally in the process of ironing.

    Ironing dressy clothes?

I have a 57% silk and 43% cotton blouse. My pants are 80% polyester, 10% rayon, and 10% wool. I iron the shirt on the silk setting. The wrinkles won’t go away. I iron the pants on the synthethic fabric setting. The wrinkles are very prominent, and nothing I do seems to help. I’ve turned the clothes inside out, I’ve used water, I’ve used a lighter touch and a harder touch, etc. How can I iron them myself because I definitely can’t go to a dry cleaners right now.
